How does an artist know when s/he is finished? / Still life drawings in progress. Artists in 2nd and 5th grade have been practicing observational drawing in the art studio. Pictured are images from our mid-process critique in which students discussed the question, "How does an artist know when s/he is finished?" The conversation was inspired by a comment from a 5th grade student who said, ”Ms. Leaphart, I think if I add anything else to my picture it will ruin it!” Knowing when to keep working and when to take a break, we concluded, is a valuable skill for an artist.
Continuous Line Still Life Drawings. Students practiced keeping their pencil on the page the entire time their drew. This helped them look closely at lines and contours on the object instead of getting wrapped up in their drawing:
