3rd grade students have been studying value, or lightness and darkness in art. Each student was given one half of a photo of themselves and asked to draw the other half without seeing it. Students measured the distance between their features to determine the proportions for the second half of the portrait. After creating a line drawing, they studied the value changes in the photo, using pencil to mirror the lightness and darkness they saw.
