First grade students have been studying their neighborhood in their classroom, looking at what types of buildings and fixtures are found in many towns. In art class, students took inspiration from Romare Bearden's images of his neighborhood in Harlem for their own neighborhood studies. They began by looking for shapes around them, asking:
What shapes are in our school building? What shapes are on the playground? The neighboring houses?
Students used painted paper as well as photos of the blocks around our school to create vibrate shape / neighborhood studies below. Click to enlarge the gallery below. The final image is from an extension of this lesson, where each student made a print of a building to add to a group map.
