Students in grades 2 and 5 used iPads to create vibrant digital self-portraits. First, they looked to portraiture throughout western history, noting the different ways that portraits have been composed as well as the types of people deemed worthy of being portrayed. They then looked to contemporary portraiture to broaden their understanding of a portrait and who could be a subject matter.
To begin their own portrait, students studied the proportions of their face, taking care to place the eyes in the middle of the head as opposed to the top. They created line drawings on paper, and next, using the free app Colorscape, students digitally colored their line drawing.
